Collagen and Stretch Marks

What is Collagen?

Collagen is a protein that supports and defends the tissues, cells, organs, and bone structure. It is the most abundant protein in mammals, making up about 25% to 35% of the whole-body protein content. When collagen fibers get damaged or when collagen production decreases, our skin’s overall health is adversely affected. Examples of negative effects include fine lines, spots and marks, wrinkles, premature aging of the skin and development of stretch marks.

Collagen and Pregnancy

During pregnancy, hormonal changes and skin stretch effect the levels of collagen found in the ligaments around a woman’s abdomen. The skin collagen becomes weaker and stretch marks form.  Up to 90% of all pregnant women develop stretch marks over the course of their pregnancy.

Collagen Damages

Aside overstretching of the skin due to weight and size changes, other factors may cause breakdown of the collagen in the skin or reduce its production:

Sun damages – UVA and UVB, the forms of ultraviolet radiation, damage the collagen in the skin and accelerates its aging. People who spend a lot of time in the sun are highly exposed to skin damages.

Smoking - Smoking cause many diseases, and makes you look older, as it damages the collagen levels on the skin.

Toxins - drugs, including prescription medications may have severe side effects that includes damage to the skin. Exposure to toxins in water, food or air may also adversely effect the creation of collagen in the body.

Using Collagen for Stretch Mark Prevention

If you want to prevent or reduce stretch marks, you should promote healthy optimal production of new collagen in the skin. You must ensure that you get  enough amount of vitamin C which is not only a powerful antioxidant, but also the major promoter of collagen synthesis. Eating foods that contains the vital vitamin or adding it as a supplement to your diet is important.

The removal of dead skin cells can also stimulate the skin to produce new collagen. You may use skin products that exfoliate the skin, to help to reduce the appearance of stretch marks.

The best way to prevent stretch marks is by using stretch mark creams that contain collagen and also encourage its natural products.
